Wilhelmi's Legislation Protects Infants

Continuing his commitment to protecting the most vulnerable, Senator AJ Wilhelmi sponsored legislation aimed at preventing newborn Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). This legislation was signed into law recently requiring hospitals to provide free information to all parents about SIDS.

"SIDS is the leading cause of death among children under one year old," Wilhelmi said. "We expect that by educating new parents and giving them best practices in to avoid dangerous situations, that we can save lives."

According to Public Act 96-1116, nurses will discuss SIDS with parents and legal guardians prior to discharge of a newborn. The information provided will coincide with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

This law will take effect January 1, 2011.
